NOAA predicts below-normal 2026 Atlantic hurricane season
NOAA Predicts a Below-Normal 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season, But Preparation Remains Essential
The 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season officially begins on June 1 and runs through November 30.
According to the latest forecast from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), this year’s season is expected to be below normal, with a 55% chance of below-average activity. Forecasters are predicting:
- 8 to 14 named storms
- 3 to 6 hurricanes
- 1 to 3 major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher)
For comparison, a typical Atlantic hurricane season produces approximately 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes. The primary factor contributing to the quieter outlook is the anticipated development of El Niño, which often suppresses hurricane formation in the Atlantic basin.
Don’t Let a Quiet Forecast Lead to Complacency
Even during a below-average season, it only takes one storm to significantly impact our community. NOAA continues to emphasize that residents should review their hurricane preparedness plans, verify emergency supplies, and stay informed throughout the season.
Waterside Village Hurricane Preparedness Reminders
We encourage all residents to:
- Review your hurricane supplies and emergency kit
- Confirm that shutters and hurricane protection systems are operational
- Update emergency contact information
- Review your evacuation plans if necessary
- Secure outdoor furniture and decorations when storms approach
- Monitor official weather updates throughout the season
While the forecast is encouraging, preparedness remains the best defense against any storm that may develop.
Stay safe and stay prepared.
